This too shall pass

In this powerful episode of Dopenly Honest, Zavian sits down with Brooke Johnson who has been in recovery for nine years and is living proof that it is never too late to start over.

Brooke’s story doesn’t hold back.

Born into addiction, raised between chaos and her grandparents’ stability, Brooke started using at just 13 years old, sometimes with her own family. What followed was decades of IV heroin use, speedballing, jail across four states, eight felonies, losing custody of her children, overdoses, homelessness, prison time at Pee Wee Valley, and waking up next to a friend who didn’t survive.

She shares openly about:

  • The heartbreak of losing her children

  • The trauma of overdose and survivor’s guilt

  • Getting high in hospitals with a spinal infection

  • Jumping fences to relapse

  • The moment in a jail bunk when something finally shifted

  • How Narcotics Anonymous and service work planted the seed that saved her life

Brooke exposes the chaos of life in addiction.

This episode dives into:

  • The mental obsession that can keep you stuck

  • The reality that “just not using” isn’t the same as recovery

  • Accountability, step work, and learning to forgive yourself

  • The power of sponsorship and community

  • What it really takes to stay sober for 8 years later

  • Rebuilding relationships with children and family

  • Marriage in recovery and creating a plan if relapse ever happens

  • Finding gratitude in the wreckage

Now married, sponsoring women, hosting international NA meetings, earning her bachelor’s degree, and helping others find their way out. Brooke is living proof that recovery is possible even after prison, loss, and surviving overdose(s).

If you’re still in active addiction… If you think you’ve disqualified yourself… If shame is keeping you stuck…

This conversation is for you.

As Brooke says, “Recovery gives you a chance to take your life back. You’ve got one shot at this life — go take it.”

Tap in. Share with someone who needs hope. Because no matter how far down you’ve gone, there is a way out.
